The Skálholt Churches

the book Skálholt - Churches by Hörð Ágústsson from 1990 is a detailed overview of all the churches that have stood in Skálholt. It states that 10 churches stood in Skálholt, including Skálholt Cathedral. Have they all stood in the same place? The first was a peasant church, later there were 6 cathedrals and 2 parish churches. Of these, 2 churches have burned down and one was damaged in a storm. It is difficult to say how old they are, as they were often built in stages and some have received such thorough repairs and renovations that it is unclear whether it is a new church. It is worth noting that the medieval churches in Skálholt were larger in terms of floor area than the church that stands today.

The year of construction of the two oldest churches is unknown, but their average age is 107.3 years.
Skálholt Cathedral was inaugurated in 1963 and celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2023.
