See Skálholt Cathedral in 3D!

You can now view 3 D pictures from inside Skálholt Cathedral in virtual reality.

Photographer Hermann Valsson took the photos last February, that show inside Skálholt Cathedral, the church's basement, the underground tunnel, the archaeological site and the booth of St Thorlak.

By following circles in the floor, you can go around the whole church. You can walk along the outer walls and see Gerðar Helgadottir's windows up close. You can go all the way up to the altar and view Nína Tryggvadóttir's altarpiece. You can go up to the pulpit and get the priest's view of the church. Also enter the St. Mary's and look at the many artifacts that the church holds. You can go up to the upper balcony and get a view of the church and walk down the stairs and see the museum in the basement of the church.

Downstairs in the museum, you can view Pál Jónsson's stone coffin and the tombstones found during the excavations led by Kristján Eldjárn in Skálholt between 1954-1958. From the museum, you go through the 11th-century tunnel where Gissur Þorvaldsson and Órækja Snorrason are believed to have fought during the Surlung era.

From the tunnel, you walk up to the platform at the archaeological site that was excavated by the Icelandic Archaeological Institute between 2002 and 2007. Since the photos were taken in February, the area is covered in snow, but the photos show a beautiful view of Vörðufell mountain, which is the mountain Bishop Páll Jónsson sent his men to fetch boulder to prepare his stone coffin at the end of the 12th century.

Finally, you can walk to the left from the church's altar to the booth of St Thorlak. You can walk into the building and enjoy the beautifully crafted shop inside. Gunnar Bjarnason designed and crafted the booth which was built in 2011.
