Aðalbjörg Stefanía Helgadóttir, who has recently published the book Lonely - connections and purpose in a world of growing loneliness, will deliver a meditation at the mass. Priestly service is performed by Rev. Axel Á Njarðvík. The organist is Jón Bjarnason.
Bishop Pétur Sigurgeirsson proposed at a synod in 1982 that the day of the elderly would be an annual event in the country's churches and that day would be on Ascension Day. Most people have now forgotten what Mr. Pétri had in mind when the content of the day was thus changed. On the day of the elderly, many senior citizens take an active part in the mass, including by reading scripture readings, giving a sermon and singing.
