About the event
Helgi Þorláksson, one of our leading experts in the sacred Þorlák, leads a walk around Skálholtstorfuna and teaches visitors about Saint Þorlák and the place names named after him in Skálholt.
Helgi Þorláksson published the book On historical places in 2022, where he discusses the importance of keeping the memory of St. Þorlák alive in Skálholt.
Þorlákur helgi Þórhallsson was bishop of Skálholt 1178 - 1193 and was the only saint in Icelandic history. In Skálholt, many place names are named after him; Þorlákssæti, Þorláksbrunnur, Þorlákshver, Þorláksbúð etc.
The procession starts at 18:00 on Wednesday 8 May at the church steps in Skálholt Cathedral. Part of the Þorláksleiðar will be walked, but it has been protected by signs. We will walk to Þorlákssæt, past the memorial to Jón Arason and his sons and to Þorláksbúd. The walk is mostly flat and takes about 1 - 1.5 hours.
The Hvänn restaurant is open and ideal to have refreshments there in connection with the walk.
The event is free and everyone is welcome.
(The event was previously advertised under the guidance of Kristján Björnsson, who failed)
