About the event
Bird and educational walk around Skálholtstunga with ornithologist Tómas Grétari Gunnarsson. We walk around Skálholtstunga and look at the bird life. Ordaining bishop Kristján Björnsson will accompany and educate guests about the history of Skálholtstaðar.
The walk starts at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday morning at Skálholtsbúðir and the walk will go down Skálholtstunga.
Built-up wilderness is becoming a rare resource. Skálholtstunga is such a place, but Skálholtstunga is the tongue between Hvítár and Brúár and is the tip of the tongue where the rivers meet. In Skálholtstunga there is a lot of birdlife, diverse habitats and a remarkable hot spring area. There is also one of the largest undisturbed swamps left in the South and diverse cultural relics after centuries of exploitation. Few people have come to this holy place, but the peace there is important for bird life.
On Saturday, May 4, there will be a bird and educational walk around Skálholtstunga. The walk starts at Skálholtsbúðir at 09:30 in the morning. It is expected that the walk will be about 6 km if the weather is good. It's a good idea to wear walking shoes or boots and bring a lunch.
The guides will be Tómas Grétar Gunnarsson, an ornithologist and director of the University of Iceland Research Center in the South, and Kristján Björnsson, the consecrating bishop of Skálholtstaðar.
